HOSPICE HILL WALK - October 2007

Each year since 1998 our club has, under the direction of Lion Stephen MacDonagh, undertaken a hill walk to raise funds for St. Francis Hospice and Lions Charities. Over the years, the walk has raised over €80,000, the lion’s share - if you’ll excuse the pun – going to the Hospice.

The system is simple. Each walker has to raise a minimum of €120. This guarantees a seat in the coach, an invigorating walk (sometimes with a soaking thrown in) and a sandwich and drink at the end of the exercise. The camaraderie is great and the sense of achievement greater.

Last year a select band of 22 walkers made the trip to Glendalough, walked around the Upper Lake and descended by the Spink. It being a beautiful day, the views were spectacular and everyone finished the walk in fine fettle.

The event has raised over €8,000. If you, upon reading this report, feel moved to contribute, please contact Malahide Lions Club at clubinfo@malahidelions.com.

The 2008 Hill Walk is currently at the planning stage. Full particulars will be posted here soon. The beneficiary again will be St. Francis Hospice, Raheny and Lions Charities. For further information, contact clubinfo@malahidelions.com

The walks are guided by experienced walkers from the Brotherhood of the Lug, Ireland's oldest established walking group. Maps of the route are provided. Participants are presented with a certificate and souvenir cap as mementos of the event. Free coach transport and light refreshments afterwards are provided. The total time for the walk including breaks is about six hours.

Hill walking is growing in popularity as a healthy form of recreation. It is both safe and enjoyable as long as those participating take simple precautions and follow the rules. If you feel like a great day out in the fresh air and sunshine (not guaranteed!) in beautiful surroundings, then the Lionís walk is your opportunity.

A FEW RULES;

In the interests of safety, the walks are confined to regular walkers in good health, who are at least 18 years of age. As the number of participants is limited, a minimum sponsorship of about £120 is required. (Of course, larger amounts are never refused!)

Participants are advised to wear warm socks and comfortable walking boots with ankle support. (This is most important.)

They also need to wear warm clothing and bring along rainwear. Dogs and alcohol are prohibited. Stewards' instructions must be obeyed.
