Lions organise Casino Fun Night
In April 2011, Malahide Lions Club in conjunction with Rory and Tom Breen organised a Casino Fun Night to raise funds for the Light of Maasai charity and in memory of Martin Breen (father of Rory & Tom).
Over one hundred people (mainly friends and relatives of the Breen family) turned out on the Bank Holiday Saturday evening to support the event. They were invited to pit their wits against blackjack dealers and/or to beat the croupier at the roulette wheel. All of this was accompanied by background music including tunes like “Big Spender” and “Money, Money, Money” which added to the atmosphere. The emphasis was on fun and not gambling.
One of the highlights of the evening was an auction of several items including a painting (€200) and a four ball in the K Club which went for €450. All the successful bidders were very happy with their bargain purchases.

Martin Breen RIP
Martin was born in Dublin but because of his business and his love of travel and adventure, he got to see four of the five continents. He loved trekking, painting and music. He was only a member of the Malahide Lions Club a little over two years but because of his driving energy and desire to succeed at everything he attempted, he made a major contribution to the Lions. He adopted the Light of Maasai as his own personal charity, even travelling out to Kenya to see what was needed. Over the last Christmas period, Martin passed away. He will be sorely missed but his memory lives on.

The Light of Maasai
Rombo is in the southern part of the Kenyan Rift Valley and borders Tanzania and the national parks Amboseli and Tsavo West. The total area is 523.9sq km and has a total population (according to the 1999 census) of 27,929 people made up of 5,489 households. The area is populated mainly by people from the Maasai tribe who live mostly off their animals. In the town areas, such as Rombo, Enterara and Elerai tribes are mixed, businesses are owned by tribes other than the Maasai.
The aims of Light of Maasai are to tackle issues such as:

  • Education
  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) / Early marriage
  • Water
  • Health Care
  • Feeding Programs
